Update: More on the Pacquiao and Filipino Perspective on the Mayweather Steroid Controversy

Yesterday I explored a few aspects of the Pacquiao and Philippine perspective on the Floyd Mayweather steroid controversy, making the point that it is far from lost on Pacquiao that Mayweather, and the U.S. Anti Doping Agency, are both Americans and he is a Filipino, and that matters for a variety of cultural and historical reasons.   This morning I visited Manny Pacquiao’s (quite excellent) website and checked the discussion board — and found a thread entitled “News Blackout on Xylocaine in America”.   Now this is not Pacquiao — it’s his fans — but it reinforces the fact that things look different when viewed from across the Pacific.

The thread refers to reports that are beginning to surface which report that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has repeatedly used Xylocaine (also known as lidocaine), a topical local anesthetic to lessen the pain in his “brittle” hands when he fights.  In some states, lidocaine would be considered a performance enhancing drug — which makes sense, presumably, if it allows a boxer to not feel pain that he would otherwise feel.  But while it’s illegal in some states, it’s legal in others. The point in the thread, though, is that the American media is conspiring against Pacquiao by not reporting on the lidocaine allegations.  Here’s a sampling from the discussion board:

well, i haven’t heard of any asian athlete guilty of being on drugs as compared to the american athletes. now they’re afraid of something they themselves have created.

Just to bust your bubble, boxing, Pacquiao, Mayweather are not big enough for America to conspire against an “Asian” boxer. There’s too much football going on right now for America to care. American public couldn’t care much. Yes, boxing will be mentioned from time to time, but it’ll remain on page 2. Also, please do not flatter yourselves too much. America will not have a concerted effort against any “Asian” (except for Kim Jung Il probably) .

Where were you when all these talks about superstition, needles, something to hide because of refusal to adhere to USADA, etc? Manny was all over the sports headlines, he was hugging the spotlight! In the wake of all that, Manny was the most searched sports personality at yahoo. Boxing was a hot item! Don’t tell me he didn’t get the short end of trial by publicity.

American journalists are not protecting Mayweather, they are protecting their own shameless reaction and support to Floyd, Sr.’s accusation. Because once they talk about it, everything is gonna slap them back on the face! Don’t you get it?

To hell what Brian and Dan were doing to defend Manny. What we want to know how American sportswriters are going to deal with Xylocaine in relation to their previous harsh judgment of Manny as if he is presumed guilty without solid proof?
